We are each an object on a shelf: Our totality the results of all experiences, all relationships, all wisdom, all struggles, and all things that have happened and that will happen. Many centuries ago, we more easily saw ourselves as a culmination of these things. Our modern culture and perspective, however, has placed our consciousness in the present moment, which is truly just a very thin veil between the past and future. The negative side of our culture also tries to impress that the past is regret and the future is fear. But, with practice, we can change that into reflection and hope, respectively. Maybe by changing this view, the object that we are (on a shelf) can be one of a much greater artistic beauty (once again).
This is my journey
